Holidays in Salo at Lake Garda, Italy

There is no doubt that Salò is blessed with the longest lakeside promenade on Lake Garda; some even consider it the most beautiful. Here you can walk undisturbed by traffic, from one of the countless cafés to the next or simply sit down on a bench along the waterline while enjoying another ice-cream cone and watching the people on the beach mooring their boats to the jetty. Here you can also spot the small fishing boats that row out on the lake every morning and bring in the delicacies that you are served in the gourmet restaurants of Salò, namely the typical whitefish of Lake Garda, “lavarello” and “coregone”. Situated in a cove on the south-western lake shore, Salò is a busy little town still exuding the aura of the elegant lakeside resort it used to be. When in 1901 the earth under Lake Garda trembled, tourism in Salò was just developing. The earthquake almost razed the town to the ground, so when repairing the damage, the lakeside promenade was rebuilt on stilts.

Salò has always been somewhat better off than its surrounding fishing villages: In 1377, the Viscontis, then rulers of Milan, designated the town to be the administrative centre of the western lake shore; in 1426, the Venetians named Salò the “Magnifica Patria della Riviera” (Magnificent hometown of the Riviera), and at the end of the fascist regime, Mussolini raised Salò to the capital of his fascist Socialist Republic.
