Grotte di Catullo
The ruins of a Roman villa have been called ‘the grottos of Catullo’ ever since the name emerged in the 15th century even though controversy remains over whether the Roman poet actually lived at this charming spot. In any case a visit to the large complex here offers ample rewards: you can go on lovely walks underneath olive trees, view the extensive ruins remaining from the wall and stroll through the double rows of the sheltered colonnades; some of the 64 arcades have been rebuilt. The admission price includes a visit to the museum. Completely redesigned, it is well worth visiting. The information panels provide an excellent introduction not only to the site but also to the early history of Lake Garda.
Scaliger Castle
In the 13th century Mastino della Scala built a water castle above Roman foundations within the curtain walls. Exhibitions are sometimes held in the old fortification at the entrance to the historical centre. Even when they are not, there’s still plenty to see – climb up the tower for wonderful views over the roofscape of the old town. A wonderful old fruit stall has stood at the front of the castle for years – it sells fresh halves of melon and quarters of pineapple as well as slices of lemon and coconut.
