This village of 6000 inhabitants enjoys an enviable position: sitting on an eye-catching peninsula that juts out into the lake right from the centre of the southern shore. Sirmione is among the best-known lakeside resorts and is a favourite with both holidaymakers and spa visitors but also with people from other holiday places on day-trips. Especially at weekends the town is swarming with Italians from near and far. It’s hardly surprising that very often the narrow lanes in the romantic Old Town are hopelessly overcrowded. Now the town administration is thinking about solving the traffic and environmental problem in Sirmione by equipping both refuse collection vehicles and suppliers’ cars with electric motors. However, once you have crossed the footbridge near the Scaliger castle you are in the traffic-free zone of the historic centre. A wide ditch that was excavated along the castle walls turns the Old Town into a real pedestrian-friendly island.
Sirmione has not only been a visitor attraction in recent times, but was already known as a spa to the Ancient Romans. In fact, 300 metres northeast of the 4-kilometre-long peninsula, hot sulphur springs bubble out of the ground. The healing waters have a temperature of almost 70 degrees centigrade and are said to be beneficial for respiratory diseases, gynaecological disorders and rheumatism.
