Sights in Torbole at Lake Garda, Italy

Casa Beust
The striking red house at the port used to be a meeting place for artists. Johannes Lietzmann, the German painter, even founded a school there for nude painting at the turn of the century. You can still just about see one of Lietzmann’s frescos on the house. It depicts St. Anthony, but unfortunately is fading rapidly.

Monte Brione
This powerful, 376 m high outcrop of limestone separates the municipalities of Torbole and Riva. You can reach it by going up along hiking trails. Definitely the most remarkable vantage point over Lake Garda up there is a bunker which the Austrians built in 1860, for the northern shore belonged to the Dual Monarchy until 1918. Further buildings were erected on the first fortress in 1908.

Nago
From Nago, which borders on Torbole, a signposted trail on the left leads to the Castello, the ruins of Penede Castle. The walk is rewarded by stunning views.

Rovereto
The museum which opened in 2002 in this little town in the Adige valley is highly modern in two respects. Firstly, modern art is exhibited at the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto MART, with the main focus on 20th and 21st century Italian art. A second reason to see this museum is the building itself, which was designed by Ticino’s top architect Mario Botta.
