Sights in Riva del Garda at Lake Garda, Italy

Chiesa dell’Inviolata
The striking octagonal church was built outside the historical centre in the 17th century. It is considered to be the most beautiful Baroque church in the Trentino. Although the Portuguese architect left it undecorated on the outside, its resplendent interior reveals a panoply of forms and shapes in the Baroque style.

Rocca
A castle was first built here in the water in the 12th century before the Scaligers converted it into a powerful fortress in 1370. Among the many owners were the Austrians, who incorporated a set of barracks into the structure. Today’s castle houses the town museum (museo civico).

Torre Apponale
The 34 m high emblem of the town which makes Riva so unmistakable on photos was built to protect the port at the start of the 13th century. The lively Piazza III Novembre spreads out at its feet to form the heart of the historical centre.

Museo Civico
The modern museum takes up three floors of the castle and features paintings as well as interesting exhibits on the history of the town.

Cascata del Varone
What shimmers away so peacefully in the Lago di Tenno rushes down 100 m here with a great roar to the valley. Situated 5 km north of Riva, the Varone waterfall was first opened to visitors in 1874.

Lago di Ledro
Those for whom Lake Garda becomes a little too crowded and perhaps a little too hot can go on this outing to the mountains. After driving through two long tunnels you come to the plateau called Valle di Ledro and shortly after it to the lake with the same name. Nestling in the mountains, it has a strange metallic green colour. From the remains of dwellings built on stilts which were found at this spot it appears that many people must have lived on the shores of Lake Ledro 4,000 years ago.

Lago di Tenno
Situated in the northern part of Lake Garda, Tenno is a popular place to go for outings. A 6 km road winds its way up to it. From Tenno you can take a beautiful walk on the Sentiero del Alto to Canale di Tenno, which besides being a smart medieval village is also a favourite spot for painters who exhibit their works here in summer.
After driving a few kilometres further into the mountains you’ll arrive at Lago di Tenno, a dark green mountain lake with a small bathing beach. This idyllic little area is entirely unlike the beaches at Lake Garda.

Roman excavations at San Martino
These somewhat hidden excavations can be reached by driving a few kilometres to the northwest of Campi. Upon arrival you can leave your car at the church and go on a 30-minute, signposted walk through the wood to the archaeological site. The ruins come from a Roman house which may have been a place of worship and was perhaps built on even older walls. The complex towers up as a striking sentinel over Tenno, the Riva plain and the ancient trails through the Ledro valley. The excavation site also features a spot nearby for a nice picnic.
