Holidays in Riva del Garda at Lake Garda, Italy
The second largest town on the lake is Riva, (population 14000). Riva does not give you the impression of being a typical tourist place, also because the locals are eager not to let the visitors take complete possession of their hometown. In fact, on the local market, in the restaurants, on the beach and during your evening stroll you will still hear a lot of Italian spoken. Compared to the neighbouring surfer village of Torbole, the visitors of Riva are much more varied. Nevertheless, the surfers like Riva, too, even though for the more professional ones the wind conditions here are not as attractive as in Torbole. However, families with children and senior citizens find the long beach and the generous lakeside parks indeed highly attractive.
Riva is situated on the fjord-like northern tip of Lake Garda. Towards the north-east, the steadily growing town is expanding into the alluvial plain of the river Sarca. The historic centre, however, lies close to the lakeside, and when entering the pedestrian zone of the Old Town, you can still see three of the original town gates.
The strategic position of this town at the northern tip of the lake was utilized already by the Ancient Romans who erected a castle here, just halfway between Rome and Trento, as a northern outpost of their empire. Later on, when Riva was under Habsburg rule, the town attracted many distinguished literary persons, such as Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Rilke and Kafka. It is only since the end of the First World War that has Riva been part of the Italian state.
