Sights in Malcesine at Lake Garda, Italy
Palazzo dei Capitani del Lago
The palace near the port was first built by the Scaligers in the 13th century; its unmistakable merlons were later added by the Venetians. It became a residence of the Venetian governors at the end of the 15th century. Today, the building houses the town hall. Although the palace is located right next to the tourist office it is usually closed to visitors. When, however, it opens its doors to the occasional exhibition don’t miss the chance of visiting the beautiful building and the little garden of palm trees right by the lake.
Santo Stefano
Although the Baroque church built in 1729 with a single nave possesses no great artistic merit in itself, the image of Christ being taken down from the Cross by Girolamodai Libri is interesting. The somewhat hidden side entrance is by the sundial.
Museo Castello Scaligero
The entire Scaliger castle is a museum. Built in 1620, the palazzo inferiore in the lowest courtyard features an information section about the flora, fauna and geology of Monte Baldo. It also explains how the Venetians transported their galleys overland to Lake Garda in the 15th century. The Goethe Room displays copies of drawings which the privy councillor made of Lake Garda.
Ermo Santi Benigno e Caro
The hermitage of the two founders Benigno and Caro is located near to Cassone. It can be reached on a 2-hour hike from the midway station of the Malcesine cableway along a signposted trail. Although the church is only open on 26 July (when a procession takes place) it remains a wonderful spot for a picnic which offers tremendous views.
Funivia Monte Baldo
From Malcesine to the midway station of San Michele right up to the mountain terminal, the Monte Baldo cableway climbs 1,700 metres in altitude – offering you plenty of time to enjoy the astounding views. It’s a doubly rewarding experience because the all-glass upper section of the new station which opened in 2002 revolves around its own axis. Once at the top, you are rewarded with an excellent choice of hikes through the mountain scenery as well as a half-hour walk on a level panoramic trail with magnificent views of the countryside below. Please note that due to extreme popularity you may have to wait an hour or so for the ride at peak times! Your best bet is to take one of the first cable cars in the early morning. The service also transports mountain bikes, though only at certain times.
