Holidays in Malcesine at Lake Garda, Italy
Malcesine is the only major village on the northern shore of Lake Garda. In fact, with its 3600 inhabitants it is almost a small town. Its Old Town is a dense huddle of narrow lanes rising up to the Castle. But if you just confine yourself to a stroll along the lakeside, you’ll miss part of this special atmosphere surrounding Malcesine. There are still quiet corners to be found here were children play ball and the neighbourhood gathers for a small talk.
If you visit Malcesine, you should not miss a walk up to the Castle. From there you can not only enjoy a magnificent view onto the lake and the roofscape, but also walk on the premises briefly inhabited by Goethe in 1786. The illustrious German poet was mistaken for a military spy while all he wanted to do was a bit of painting. Another nice thing to do in Malcesine is simply sitting on the jetty in the harbour while having some lovely Italian ice-cream and watching the hustle and bustle on the lake.
