Holidays in Arco at Lake Garda, Italy
Arco is a destination particularly familiar to rock climbers and mountaineers. This romantic little town with its many Austrian Jugendstil (art nouveau) villas is surrounded by mountains and offers freestyle climbers and passionate via ferrata enthusiasts rewarding terrain. Held each year in September, the ‘Rockmaster’ climbing cup offers the world’s best climbers the opportunity to pit their skills on daring routes up the mountain. Arco also features climbing trails of up to 1,000 m in length.
The place is equally popular among mountain bikers. Those wishing to explore the north of Lake Garda on challenging single trails or simply at their leisure are sure to find their preferred route in and around Arco.
Due to its mild climate Arco was chosen by the Austrian imperial court as its winter residence in the mid-19th century. The many Austrian art nouveau villas which have been preserved today still attest to the splendour of those bygone times. Extensive parks beg to be discovered on lengthy walks. Particularly worth visiting is the arboretum which displays enormous trees. But Arco not only plays host to sporting thrills: it entices the visitor to linger and take a stroll to and past its countless ice cream parlours, pizzerias and shops. The nightlife is centred on the central church square.
