Holidays in Torri del Benaco at Lake Garda, Italy
Torri del Benaco (population 2600) shows its most attractive side when you arrive by boat. This is a very handy option since the ferry service from Maderno to Torri del Benaco will save you the tedious drive half-way round the lake when wanting to reach the opposite shore. When looking at Torri from the boat, you will notice how dominantly the fortified Scaliger castle overlooks the village. In fact, this castle used to guard the houses below; nowadays it no longer serves a defensive purpose, but is home to a Museum of Popular Art well worth a visit on a cloudy day. In 1383, the Scaliger ruler Antonio della Scala had the 9th-century fort converted into a fortified castle. When the castle was renovated in the 20th century, a rose marble slab was discovered that depicted a five-step ladder (“scala”), the coat of arms of the Scaliger family. The stone slab is now on display in the castle museum.
Torri del Benaco is one of the more tranquil places around the lake and not quite so overcrowded as the neighbouring towns Garda and Bardolino. The oval-shaped harbour is dotted with brightly coloured fishing boats and stretches wide into the town centre. Only a few small streets lead from the dock to the Old Town which is surprisingly peaceful. From time to time a group of tourists strolls through the streets, bringing the souvenir shops to life, but most of the time you can enjoy perfect calm. The hinterland of Torri del Benaco is not as steep as it is further north, as in this area Monte Baldo recedes from the lakeshore, leaving more space for the village.
