Holidays in Garda at Lake Garda, Italy
Garda has 3500 inhabitants and stretches in the wide bay between the prominent “Punta San Vigilio” and the mighty cliff Rocca. Its beautiful, traffic-free Old Town is as popular with residents as it is with visitors. Enjoy strolling along the water’s edge and see if you can resist the temptation of having some delicious ice-cream. The narrow streets of the Old Town are often swarming with people, but if you take a little detour off the principal axes, you may discover some quiet corners as well. In the evenings, Garda gets fairly tranquil and it is particularly pleasant to sit in one of the lakeside cafés along Lungolago Adelaide.
As early as 768 AD, Charlemagne raised Garda to the status of a County and from then on, the lake took the name of this township instead of carrying the former Latin denomination of Lake Benacus. The ancient castle was once perched upon the Rocca di Garda, a rock rising 200 metres high above the lake. Today, only the remains of it can be seen.
