Holidays in Bardolino at Lake Garda, Italy
If you only know one holiday resort on Lake Garda, you probably know Bardolino. This village is renowned on account of the name it has given to the fine local wines that are grown on the gentle hills rising behind the town. Even though the Bardolino is no top-quality wine, it goes well with the local cuisine and the mild climate. The village of Bardolino is situated at the south-eastern lake shore which is also called the “Riviera degli Olivi” (Olive Riviera), since this area is not only famous for its wine but also for its exquisite olives.
This stretch of land has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Later, the Ancient Romans founded a town and in medieval times, Bardolino was a free township until it came under the rule of the Scaligers. The Old Town of Bardolino (population 6200) is bigger than that of any other village on the Olive Riviera. It has broad, criss-crossing streets and its shops stay open until almost midnight. Day and night the streets bustle with life – except at noon when everyone goes for a siesta. A particular hotspot is Piazza Principe Amedeo which stretches from the parish church down to the lakeside. If you are after the sort of quiet and peaceful holiday, you would be well advised to choose a different destination. Bardolino is a town that really rocks!
