Surfing

This aquatic sport is without doubt the royal discipline on Lake Garda. It all began in the 1970s as a kind of sociocultural phenomenon: For the first time, a whole generation of youngsters had discovered a sport that they did not learn from their parents but from their clique. The mountain valleys to the north of Lake Garda act like a nozzle and produce constant winds which can become quite fierce at times. This makes the lake a real surfing paradise.

The ultimate surfer destination is certainly the northern lakeside village of Torbole. As soon as the wind starts blowing the lake gets so packed with surfboards that it almost seems possible to walk over the water surface. This area has yet another advantage: In the part of the lake belonging to Trentino no motor boats are allowed. As for surfing schools and surfing centres providing board rental, you will find most of them in Torbole, Riva, Malcesine and Gargnano.
