Mountainbike
The mountains around Lake Garda offer plenty of possibilities for tough workout on your bike. That’s why Paola Pezzo, Italy’s most celebrated mountain bike lady and double Olympic champion, has chosen this area for training. Especially the northern end of the lake is very popular with ambitious cyclists. Contact the Riva tourist information office for comprehensive information.
Every year around the end of April and the beginning of May, the area around Riva is the venue of the Bike Festival. The absolute highlight of this event is an exhausting bike marathon during which more than 5,000 cyclists struggle up the steep ascents, pushing themselves to their physical limits. A similar competition is held in Limone every October.
The highest mountain on Lake Garda is Monte Baldo. Well-trained cyclists conquer its summit at 2,218 metres at every time of the year. However, if you don’t fancy so much drudgery, we recommend taking the cable car from Malcesine which also carries bikes at certain times of the day. If you didn’t bring your own bike, you can hire one from the Furioli Bike Shop in Malcesine (Piazza Matteotti, tel. 045 740 16 83). They also offer to take it up to Monte Baldo for you. Moreover, they organize guided tours.
During the summer months, the province of Verona offers a bus and bike service: The blue-coloured regional buses carry you and your bike halfway up Monte Baldo to the villages of Novezza or Prada from where you can easily cycle back downhill.
